Seal Hunt

Berthed Swiler (52 min 32 sec) Overview
Description
“Berthed Swiler” is the ACTRA winning story of a non-hunter, urbanite journalist who in 1977 signs aboard the
sealing vessel “arctic explorer” as a licensed sealer to experience seal hunting first hand. It was recorded
live on the vessel and covers a range of emotions and activities from the first kill by the neophyte
sealer to the memories of sealing covering decades by members of the crew. The live recording takes
you the listener aboard the “arctic explorer” as she pounds though the ice, puts you in the mess as
the sealers talk and reminisce and brings the journalist’s thoughts to life as he struggles with the
realities of killing.

Berthed Swiler - Epilogue (12 min 17 sec)
Description
Jim Winter felt so strongly for the plight of the sealer he went on to become the founding president
of the Canadian Sealers Association. From urbanite non-hunter to committed defender of sealers against the
hypocrisy which encompassed this issue then and still does today. Twelve years after the release of
“Berthed Swiler”, Mr. Winter recorded this short narrative concerning the changes in the issue between 1978 and
1990.

Gary Troake Interview (16 min 13 sec)
Description
In 2000 Garry Troake, fisherman and former president of the Canadian Sealers Association spoke frankly
about the seal hunt, seals and their relationship with cod. I believe Garry was best known for being one of the
most honest people involved in the sealing issue. He called it as he saw it whether it was disparaging to
the federal government, the provincial government or the protest side of the issue. His main concern was the conservation
of the harp seal and all marine species found in the waters off Newfoundland and Labrador to ensure that he and others like
him could continue to harvest these resources long into the future. In this, he felt the circus which had been created
by the governments and protest groups would supersede the attention needed to acquire sound scientific data.

Anne Troake Interview (15 min 26 sec)
Description
In a 2006 interview with the CBC's The Arts Tonight, Anne Troake talks about her movie,
My Ancestors Were Rogues and Murderers, as well as her family, her home and the evolution of her
perspetive on the sealing issue from an environmental point-of-view.

Commentary by Gary Troake (2 min 33 sec)
Description
Taken from Anne Troake's - My Ancestors Were Rogues and Murderers,
this 1999 commentary from Gary Troake prefectly sums up the Canadian harp seal hunt and all those involved.
There is nothing that I have heard or read that gets to the heart of the matter and says it how it is.

IFAW Deception (52 sec)
Description
Radek Skrivanek posed as a journalist for a conservation magazine to obtain passage to the seal hunt with the
Troake's, a Twillingate family of proud Newfoundlanders who took it upon themselves to promote the truth about the
Canadian harp seal hunt. In reality, Skrivanek was an IFAW employee. His report was twisted to make sealers out to be barbaric savages
and even caused some Newfoundlanders to turn on the Troake's for taking him out in the first place. These people
did not realize the deception that had taken place. This perception remained for years until shorty after Gary
Troake's death when Radek came forward and admitted he had actually seen nothing wrong when he went out and, in fact,
everything he saw was highly professional and skilled. This is part of his confession taken from
Anne Troake's - My Ancestors Were Rogues and Murderers.

IFAW - Wolf in Seals Clothing (1 min 56 sec)
Description
Taken from Anne Troake's - My Ancestors Were Rogues and Murderers,
this commentary from Annemieke Roell and Gary Troake comes shortly after Ms. Roell was fired from the IFAW.
In 1996 Annemieke Roell, an IFAW campaigner for thirteen years, was fired when she attempted to broker a deal between the
organization and the sealers. A deal which would have seen the IFAW have unprecidented control within the policy
making process for the Canadian harp seal hunt.

Paul Watson Interview (8 min 43 sec)
Description
In 1978, after Paul Watson was ousted from Greenpeace for commiting actions of violence which were against Greenpeace's
code of conduct, he did an interview with Barbara Frum of CBC. In it he revels the true motivation of seal hunt
protest groups. Motivations which exist today with the only difference being the increased
number of groups looking to cash in on the seal hunt payday. Ironically, subsequent to this interview
Watson went on to found his own activist group and uses the same tactics to raise money and visibility
that he condems Greenpeace for using. Talk about hypocrisy!
Before the interview there is a short piece on Brian Davies,
founder and then Executive Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).

Canadian Seal Hunt (5 min 53 sec)
Description
The video highlights some of the main points this site has examined and points to the
hypocrisy of the issue. I thank the creator for the information credit but have one correction, the
video states there have been 400 years of seal hunts when it is roughly 300 years of recorded organized hunts.

Up The Anti (12 min 20 sec)
Description
The video does a great job of showing how the pro side of the sealing issue can have a peaceful
demonstration while the anti-side only wishes to antagonize and provoke. Does anti organizer, Steve
Thompson, make any sense? I would have to say no. When one considers his comments and those of Paul
Watson, his mentor, in regards to sealers and Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans in general, it would
appear the SSCS is more akin to a hate group rather than animal rights. I find it interesting when
the anti side criticizes the involvement of the Fur Institute of Canada which is steeped in hunting
research data when their side has none.

Animal Rights

UK News Special on Animal Rights (19 min 24 sec)
Description
The video backs up what this site has been saying about the similarities between the animal rights movement and other socially
undesirable change movements. When society clearly refuses to buy into their twisted view of how society
should be they turn to violence. As you watch this take notice how the whole movements goal is not to try and create change
but rather to force change no matter if the majority wants it or not. Notice the part where one representative says,
"all we are asking for is change" but in reality they are demanding it with the threat of violence.
Personally, I find it ridiculous how these groups are legally aloud to commit blackmail to help further their cause.

Excerpt From Penn & Teller TV Show (15 min 30 sec)
Description
Even though the video focuses on People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) the information
seems to be the same for all animal rights groups, not to be confused with animal welfare groups. Please
be advised that there is strong language used in the video.

Another Animal Rights Deception (3 min 20 sec)
Description
The audio file points out how animal rights groups create a false aura of reputability. In this case they do
so by setting up a fake physicians group. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has also
been known to create groups to give their "findings" validity. This piece also points out how this is only one
method used by these groups to manipulate media.

HSUS Supports Terrorism (3 min 22 sec)
Description
The video points out how the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has supported local terrorism
throughout the United States.

HSUS Overview - The Machine (6 min 39 sec)
Description
The video touches on many of the points I have made reference to within the site. When I found it I figured
it would be good to point out how others have found the same information I have. Information everyone should know
about the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and all other animal rights groups.
HSUS - Backdoor Politics (2 min 20 sec)
Description
The video shows how the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) will manipulate the legislative process
to gain precedence which they exploit in other issues. As I have pointed out and this video attests to, they
used cockfighting to weasel their way into Florida and by the time they were done they had destroyed the pork
industry in the state. I believe, the seal hunt represents the same mentality and if they have success here they will
move on to recreational hunting of all types, the banning of which is one of the HSUS's stated primary goals. I would
point out here, as does the video, that this is not about cockfighting but rather the methods used by animal rights groups
to achieve their goals.
