The German Parliament, lead by the Barbel Hohn – Green party deputy faction leader, has unanimously adopted a bill to ban
the importation of seal products from Canada.
Ms. Hohn based her views on a brief visit to Canada under the auspices of an animal rights group who has campaigned for
years to end the Canadian seal hunt: not exactly an unbiased source of information. Did she get both sides of the issue?
Did she organize a committee within the German parliament to investigate the unfounded accusations made by animal rights
groups? Was she worried about the impact it would have on the thousands of families who rely on the income they receive
from the seal hunt? No, no and no.
In an online news story concerning the decision, Frau Hohn said,
|
|
"The seal pups can't even swim yet," she said.
"The hunters wait just a few weeks after they are born until the color of their fur changes, then they beat
them over the heads and often skin them alive."
|
Such a statement is truly ignorant and displays a total lack of knowledge in the issue. The fact that this is the basis
for a country banning a product is staggering and frightfully enlightening.
Ms. Hohn appears to be appalled by the age at which seals are killed while in her country roughly 500,000 wild boar are
killed including piglets called “squeakers”. Seal pups can swim, its not the color of the fur that changes but the fur
itself and seals are not skinned alive.
Individuals like Ms. Hohn who believe the civilized citizens of Canada would be capable of skinning animals alive are
lucky the process of natural selection does not apply to humans. Their lack of common sense would have been their undoing
long ago.
Germany, above all others, should realize when you rub shoulders with fanatics very bad things happen. The
animal rights agenda is a fanatical agenda which is totally unrealistic. 99.92% of the world’s population realizes this
and embraces a more reasonable animal welfare approach.
